Valentines Day

Bonds residents

Residents of the Almshouses celebrated Valentines in style with evening of fun and food held in the communal lounge at Bonds Hospital. All organized by their social club.

February 2013

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

As I write the snow has gone but there is promise of more to come, but there are signs of Spring. The Witch Hazel in my garden has put on a wonderful show of gold blossom with a sweet honey scent. Snowdrops are coming into flower, Crocus leaves are peeping up and there are buds on the Narcissi. The sharp frosts don’t seem to have done much damage; on the contrary we hope they have killed off garden pests and nasty bugs and diseases. Aren’t we grateful to the heating engineers who have kept us warm and cosy!

I was delighted to be asked to attend the Bond’s Hospital Social Committee Annual Meeting. New officers were appointed and ideas for outings and activities shared. It looks as if you will have a busy social year in 2013. It was good to see representatives from Bond’s Court in attendance. I am sure that joint activities will be so much more enjoyable when residents from all three Almshouses take part.

I wonder how many times you have passed this window but not read the description on the wall. The Motto ‘So long as the World shall endure’ was the wish of Thomas Bond expressed in his Will about his Hospital. The shell design symbolises the development of the Almshouses over the years and on into the future. The colour blue represents ‘true Coventry Blue’ and the colours of nature – green, yellow and red – represent the investment in land and farming which brings in the majority of Bond’s Estate funds. Why not take a minute to read the full description?

AnnouncementFrom The Chairman

Well Christmas has come and gone, the decorations are safely stored away until next year and we now look forward to the New Year hoping for better times.

Not much progress has been made with our development plans at Ford’s and the Hill Street car park site but we plan to move things forward in the next few weeks.

We like to maintain a list of prospective residents so that, when a vacancy occurs, we can make a new appointment without delay. We do receive enquiries from various sources such as Social Services, from the Open Days we have from time to time and from introductions made by residents. If you are aware of anyone who might be interested in coming to live in the Almshouses please do let Carol Bradford know and she will be pleased to meet them.

A kind friend gave me a new book about Coventry for Christmas called ‘Coventry, Hidden in Plain Sight’. It is full of photographs of quiet corners and interesting places in and around the city. There is a good picture of Ford’s Hospital and more of Bond’s.

bonds hospital courtyardThere is a comment about the monument in Bond’s courtyard saying that it might mark the site ofan old water pump. There must have been a water supply in the early days and it would be interesting to know where that information came from. Old pictures I have seen show the column as an old gas lamp. I wonder if it was put there at the time the building was renovated in the 1830s.

It just remains for me, on behalf of the Trustees, to wish everyone a happy and fulfilling New Year.
